Altum Counselling and Consulting is led by Shawn van der Linden, a highly skilled and experienced Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, trained psychotherapist, restorative practice facilitator, and experienced executive leader and manager. Altum Services

  • At Altum we provide a range of counselling modalities including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solutions Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Process Therapy and Internal Family Systems. We are able to help all types of people, from adolescents to retirees, in dealing with a range of concerns. Altum also has a depth of experience with providing Critical Incident Response and Psychological First Aid to a broad range of workplace settings. Counselling sessions are eligible for a Medicare rebate under a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP.

  • Shawn provides IDDM (Mentorship), which is a new innovative model of daily accompaniment. IDDM is powerfully informed by the psychological sciences while being integrated with Catholic faith and spirituality.     Shawn also provides Coaching to support leaders to uncover new meaning and deeper awareness, and to grow and make better choices with that new information.

  • Altum provides clinical and ministry Supervision to practitioners working in mental health, pastoral, education and Church ministry roles, supporting them to provide a better, more confident and creative service to clients and the people they support and accompany. Supervision helps practitioners to extend themselves in relation to their practice by providing:

    • support to enhance skills, competence and confidence

    • a reflective space and emotional support

    • assistance with professional development

    • guidance on delivering services to clients in a safe and ethical manner

    • information about compliance with professional and organisational treatment standards and ethics and legal issues in practice.

  • Shawn is a Licensed Mental Health First Aid Instructor with Mental Health First Aid Australia, and also delivers a range of other workshops and training seminars related to mental health and wellbeing, and topics such as Mindfulness, Managing Stress, Compassion Burnout, Building Resilience, Mastering Difficult Conversations and Interactions and Responding to Trauma and Compassion Fatigue.

  • At Altum, we have a depth of experience in mediation, restorative practice and group conferencing facilitation. Through using a Restorative Approach, Altum is able to address the consequences of harm and enable repair and learning, promoting emotional literacy and social skills development, which then benefits not only the relationship but the wider community. We sensitively support individuals, families, and teams alike, helping them process past hurt or ongoing conflict and guiding them through challenging and difficult situations, or simply when they find themselves stuck.

  • With extensive experience and a proven track record in leading and transforming organisations, programs and teams, Altum provides targeted consultancy services in areas relating to organisational culture reviews, clinical governance development and service delivery reviews and development.

About Shawn

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Shawn van der Linden brings 30 years of diverse experiences to Altum Counselling and Consulting. Shawn holds a strong belief in the transformative power of the whole human experience and the role that the interpersonal process can play in promoting genuine human flourishing.

  • Starting out his career as a qualified carpenter and later serving as a Catholic missionary in Australia and Internationally, Shawn married and raised four children in Canberra, Australia, where he also completed his studies in theology, social work, and family therapy. He went on to lead a counselling and support service for young men and co-founded The OzHelp Foundation, a national suicide prevention organisation for apprentices in the construction industry.

    As the Executive Director of Pastoral Support for the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, Shawn developed programs in adult faith formation, parish, youth, marriage and family ministry, and a range of community development strategies. He later served as the CEO of Conflict Resolution Service Inc, National Manager of Integrated Onsite Counselling for Converge International, and the Manager of Student Counselling and Mental Health for Catholic Education (21,000 students in 56 schools).

    Shawn now serves as the International Programs Consultant for the CatholicPsych Institute and IDDM, and has been trained in their CatholicPsych Model of Applied Personalism (CPMAP) and provides Integrated Daily Dialogic Mentorship (IDDM) to individuals in Australia and internationally.

    Shawn has maintained a counselling practice throughout his career and holds a strong belief in the transformative power of the whole human experience and the role that the interpersonal process can play in promoting genuine human flourishing.
